VOLUNTEERING ON THE FARM, Secondary School Lucian Blaga Jibou, ROMANIA
Students
had to visit a local farm and get into the farming environment. They needed to
observe what the farmers do in order to raise and take good care and animals.
Added to that, students had the chance to see and try do the job the farmers
usually do. It was a great opportunity for students to learn new skills and
abilities and think if it could be a good job for their future. A
group of students visited a local farm, where they raise animals and use
diverse agricultural machinaries to harvest the land and produce organic food.
Students got to the farm and met the farmers who showed them around. They saw
sheep, cows, sheep dogs, rabbits,
donkeys, oxen and many other animals. Some of them enjoyed it and to others it
was a challenge being such close to farm animals. Farmers showed them what
tasks they have from morning to evening. Students fed the animals, played with
them, even tried working the land with tools.
This activity helped raise awereness at the
types of food we eat every day, where it is produced, as well as at the skills
you need to have in order to be a good farmer. Students gained more self confidence
and they got more opened to helping working the land and taking good care of
animals.
Even
if there are students who are not into farming, or do not like animals, this
activity helped them open their horizons and see something else, apart from the
lessons in the class. Open air activities give students the opportunity to
observe the world around them, were food is produced and what is healthy for
our own way of living.
